Elizabeth Buck is Associate Professor of Flute at Arizona State University. She spent 2005-06 as Visiting Associate Professor at Indiana University (Bloomington). Prior to joining the faculty at ASU, Dr. Buck performed with the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra as Principal Flute (1994-2003). During her tenure as Principal Flute, Dr. Buck performed as concerto soloist with the Phoenix Symphony on numerous occasions, appearing on Classics evening concert series as well as the Phoenix Symphony Chamber Orchestra concert series.
Previous orchestral positions include Principal Flute with the Houston Grand Opera and the Nova Philharmonia Portuguesa in Lisbon, Portugal. An active chamber musician in addition to orchestral performer, Dr. Buck is a member of the Manhattan Wind Quintet and performs regularly with the Arizona State University Faculty Woodwind Quintet. With the Manhattan Wind Quintet, Dr. Buck has recorded on Centaur Records, and has performed on such distinguished series as the Frick Collection in Washington, DC, the Dame Myra Hess Series in Chicago, and the Da Camera Series in Houston, TX.
With the Buck/Thiele Duo, Dr. Buck has recorded Sonatas for Flute and Harp and has appeared in recital at the National Flute Association Convention in Pittsburgh, PA. As a recitalist and master class clinician, Dr. Buck has performed for the Arizona Flute Society, the National Flute Association Conventions in Phoenix and Pittsburgh, Bowling Green State University, Butler University, Indiana University, Metropolitan State College of Denver, Northern Arizona University, Penn State Erie, Rice University, SUNY-Stony Brook and Texas Tech University.
Internationally, she has given masterclasses and guest recitals at Yonsei University (Seoul), Seoul International Summer Music Festival, and in Gwangju, Korea. Among her distinctions and awards, Dr. Buck has won the New York Arts Club Competition, the New York Flute Club Competition, and the Juilliard School Concerto Competition. Dr. Buck spends her summer as Artist-Faculty at the Brevard Music Center, performing as Principal Flute with the Brevard Music Center Orchestra. She has also participated in the Indiana University Summer Music Festival, Grand Teton Music Festival, the Sarasota Music Festival, and the Banff Centre Summer Music.
She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Rice University as well as Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School. Dr. Buck is both an active and life member of the National Flute Association and the Arizona Flute Society. In her spare time, Dr. Buck enjoys cooking, organic gardening, hiking and reading.
