International career as soloist with Lyric Opera of Chicago and Cologne, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Monte Carlo, Spoleto, Santa Fe, Miami, St. Louis, New Orleans, and San Diego opera companies. Appearances with Rotterdam Philharmonic, Oslo Philharmonic, and Concertgebouw Orchestras and German and Dutch radio orchestras. More than 100 appearances on PBS television and National Public Radio. W. Stephen Smith

Baritone. W. Stephen Smith previously was a faculty member at the Juilliard School for thirteen years. Prior to that appointment he taught at the University of Houston and was Chair of the Voice Department at the Saint Louis Conservatory of Music. Professor Smith also served as a vocal instructor for the Houston Grand Opera Studio from 1990 to 2003 and has held a position on the voice faculty of the Aspen Music Festival and School since 1996. His book, The Naked Voice: A Wholistic Approach to Singing, was published by Oxford University Press in 2007.
Professor Smith’s students include many of today's most noted artists such as Christine Brewer, Joyce DiDonato, Eric Owens, and Marietta Simpson. His students have performed leading roles in major opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and La Scala, and have won numerous prestigious competitions. Many have placed in the District and Regional Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and have been national finalists. Among the apprentice programs where his students have studied and performed are those at the Santa Fe, San Francisco, and Chautauqua Operas, Opera Theater of Saint Louis, and Wolf Trap.

BACKGROUND
BS, Northwestern University
Michael Ehrman has extensive experience as both an opera director and educator. Among his credits are critically acclaimed productions at the Houston Grand Opera, Greater Miami Opera, Wolf Trap Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, Minnesota Opera, Chautauqua Opera, and Chicago Opera Theater. He has staged more than 20 productions for Central City Opera, including the 50th anniversary production of the Ballad of Baby Doe and the world premiere of Henry Mollicone’s Gabriel’s Daughter, as well as Noye’s Fludde by Benjamin Britten for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
A noted educator, Ehrman is a favored guest director at Indiana University, New England Conservatory of Music, and Yale University, among other schools, and has held faculty appointments at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and Roosevelt University. He has also served on the artistic staffs of numerous young artist programs, including the San Francisco Opera’s Merola Program and the Greater Miami, Wolf Trap, Chautauqua, and Lake George Operas. Ehrman is the director of the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Artists Training Program at Central City Opera in Colorado. Recent projects include directing The Magic Flute for the Ravinia Festival and La bohème for the Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional in the Dominican Republic.

Soloist with Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Sir Georg Solti and Claudio Abbado and with Omaha Symphony Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, and Music of the Baroque.
