A prescreening video is required. Requirements are the same as for a live audition.
2-3 original compositions (hard copy or electronic scores) + 2 video recordings. Electronically submitted compositions must be formatted to print on 8 1/2" x 11" paper.
Scores become the property of CIM and are not returned. Applicants for graduate programs (MM, PS, DMA) should include at least one work for large ensemble (chamber orchestra, full orchestra, or wind ensemble).
Additional supporting materials must be uploaded at the time of application to include the following:
- A chronological list of completed compositions (including date of composition, instrumentation, duration, and any performances)
- A short résumé showing musical activities and training
- Two video recordings (uploaded separately) demonstrating technical and musical accomplishment on an instrument or voice. These recordings should present two (and only two) contrasting selections of your choice. Accompaniment is not required, except in voice.
Interview + Admission examinations + Live audition
Testing for first-year undergraduate and undergraduate transfer applicants:
- Written knowledge of key signatures, intervals, triads, scales, and simple part writing. You are expected to complete as much of the exercise as knowledge and ability permit.
- An ear training test that includes simple melodic and harmonic dictations.
Testing for graduate includes:
- Written knowledge of key signatures, intervals, triads and seventh chords, and scales. Part writing and harmonic analysis will consist of both diatonic and chromatic chords in chorale style. You are expected to complete as much of the exercise as knowledge and ability permit.
- A harmonic dictation test that includes diatonic and chromatic chords.
