Tony Ames

F. Anthony Ames is currently principal percussionist with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C; a position he has held since 1968. Since that time Mr. Ames has worked with an impressive roster of conductors including: Claudio Abbado, Thomas Beecham, Leonard Bernstein, Herbert Blomstedt, Pierre Boulez, James Conlon, Raphael Fruhbeck de Burgos, Edo DeWaardt, Antal Dorati, Charles Dutoit, Arthur Fiedler, Eric Leinsdorf, Raymond Leppard, Yoel Levi, Lorin Maazel, Neville Marriner, Zubin Mehta, Mstislav Rostropovich, Max Rudolf, Seiji Ozawa, Leonard Slatkin, George Solti, Yuri Termikanov, Klaus Tennstedt, Michael Tilson Thomas and Franz Weiser-Moest.

Other music activities include founding the 20th Century Consort and the Romantic Chamber Ensemble, assisting in the formation of the Folger Consort and Hesperus, establishing the Martha's Vineyard Music Festival, and creating Millennium, Inc., a multi-disciplined chamber music production company.

An active producer, he has produced a number of recordings for the Smithsonian label and a compact disc for Bridge Records; he also created and produced themes and sound effects for the PBS series "Music," co-produced a film segment for Polytel, created a ten-hour documentary series on the history of Western art music, the pilot of which won first prize in the Documentary Performance category at the Houston Film Festival in 1986.

He has also created and staffed the Potomac Chamber Orchestra for recording soundtrack for American musicals, and for four years engaged the orchestra for the Washington Opera's Terrace Theater series at the Kennedy Center. He was house producer for Animation House, a now defunct commercial animation company, producing many spots for local and national television.

As a writer-producer he has worked with a number of production companies including Ward and Associates, and has written a few unproduced feature film and television scripts. Most recently he co-wrote and produced a children's musical entitled "The Red Shoes" and is the professional representative for the Bob Brown Puppet Company.

He made chamber music appearances with the Barnes & Hampton duo during their annual Celtic Christmas programs (Dumbarton Chamber Concerts). He was one of the founders of the National Symphony Orchestra outreach program "National Symphony Orchestra in Your Neighborhood," developing and producing chamber concerts with NSO musicians throughout the Washington metropolitan region from 1992 through 1994. He is president of Potomac Productions.

Jauvon Gilliam

Jauvon Gilliam was named principal timpanist of the National Symphony Orchestra in 2009 at age 29.

Since 2011, Jauvon has been performing regularly as guest principal timpanist of the Budapest Festival Orchestra. He is also timpanist of the All-Star Orchestra, a made-for-PBS group comprised of players from orchestras across the United States.

Jauvon has previously performed with The Cleveland Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Detroit Symphony and Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, as well as the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. He was also timpanist of the Bear Valley Music Festival for three seasons.

Prior to his NSO appointment, Jauvon was timpanist of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra for seven years. While in Winnipeg, he was also timpanist of the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra and, for a time, played drum set for the WSO pops series.

As an educator, Jauvon has taught clinics at universities and institutions across Canada and the United States, including the Interlochen Arts Academy, New World Symphony and the Percussive Arts Society International Convention. He is currently Director of Percussion Studies/Artist-in-Residence at the University of Maryland, timpani coach for the National Youth Orchestra of the USA, and the co-founder of the annual Washburgh Timpani Seminar.

A native of Gary, Indiana, Jauvon began his musical career playing piano, winning his first national competition at age 11.  He received a full scholarship in piano performance to attend Butler University, but later changed to full-time percussion study. He graduated with honors with a degree in Arts Administration and then continued his graduate studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music.

Lee Hinkle

Dr. Lee Hinkle is a percussionist and classically trained baritone vocalist whose percussion playing has been called “rock-steady” by the Washington Post and having “a notable sense of flare [sic]” by Potomac Stages. His performance highlights have included performances with the National Symphony Orchestra, Florida Orchestra, Left Bank Concert Society, Congressional Chorus, and the Taipei Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. He has toured with several performers and groups, including Bebe Neuwirth, Bernadette Peters, and the American Wind Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to these projects, he has been a regular performer at the Tony Award-winning Signature Theatre in Shirlington, VA. In October 2009, he was a featured concerto soloist for Christopher Rouse’s Der Geretette Alberich with the University of Maryland Symphony Orchestra.

A recording studio musician, Dr. Hinkle has several CDs to his credit, and his recordings can be heard on four different record labels, including Capstone Records and the C.F. Peter's Corporation. On Marimba Concerti with Percussion Orchestra, published by Capstone Records, he is a featured marimba soloist with the McCormick Percussion Group.

An active percussion recitalist, Dr. Hinkle has presented solo recitals and masterclasses at universities and festivals across the Eastern U.S., including the University of South Florida; Virginia Commonwealth University; Arts Club of Washington; and the Maryland / Delaware Percussive Arts Society's Day of Percussion. Dr. Hinkle will perform with the Janis Potter All-Star Mallet Ensemble at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in November 2010.

Dr. Hinkle has served as the music director of the University of Maryland Percussion Ensemble since the fall of 2007. In addition to two concerts per academic year, the ensemble regularly performs for “Maryland Day,” a university-wide event that caters to the local community and sees more than 70,000 attendees annually. The ensemble performs both classical transcriptions and the music of contemporary composers such as John Cage, Tan Dun, Sven-David Sandström, and George Crumb.

The percussion ensemble regularly features guest soloists, which have included Evelyn Elsing (cello); Gregory Miller (horn); David Salness (violin); and Sarah Eckman (flute). Under Dr. Hinkle's direction, the ensemble performed at the MD/DE Day of Percussion in 2008, and was featured in the Bang on a Can Marathon new music concert in March 2009. In January 2009, the ensemble were guest performers in the Magic Marimba Festival at the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL.

Dr. Hinkle is currently a lecturer at the University of Maryland in College Park, MD, where he has been studio teaching, presenting masterclasses, and directing the percussion ensemble since 2007. He was invited to join the adjunct faculty in August 2009.

Outside of the world of percussion, Lee is a PADI Scuba Divemaster, a brown belt in Isshinryu Karate, and a classically trained baritone vocalist. He can be found singing Sunday mornings at St. Mark Presbyterian Church in Rockville, MD.

Chuck Redd

Chuck Redd is a seasoned performer on both drums and vibraphone, currently the 2004-2005 Artist-In-Residence at The Smithsonian Jazz Cafe in Washington D.C. He began performing internationally when he joined the Charlie Byrd Trio in 1980 at the age of 21. That year, he joined the Great Guitars (Barney Kessel, Charlie Byrd and Herb Ellis.) To his credit are twelve extensive European tours and five tours of Japan, with the Barney Kessel Trio, Ken Peplowski, Terry Gibbs and Conte Candoli.

Redd's career as a featured artist has earned critical acclaim:

Chuck was featured vibraphonist with the Mel Torme All-Star Jazz Quintet from 1991 until 1996. While on tour with Torme, Ira Gitler of Jazz Times said: "Redd's vibes were equally notable for vigor and melodiousness."

Jazz Times also praised Redd's playing on Charlie Byrd's 1999 release, My Inspiration calling his vibes work, "Exquisite!"

He has toured and performed with such luminaries as Dizzy Gillespie, Mel Torme, Tommy Flanagan, Ray Brown, Monty Alexander, Laurindo Almeida, Tal Farlow, Red Norvo, Scott Hamilton, Dr. Billy Taylor, Marian McPartland, Bucky Pizzarelli, and Terry Gibbs, and Joe Wilder.

Chuck is featured on over 50 recordings. Recent releases include his own Arbors CD, All This and Heaven Too, featuring Gene Bertoncini and George Mraz, The Swing Kings, an all-star session featuring Bucky and John Pizzarelli, Ray Kennedy and Ken Peplowski; and Gypsy Soul, with Frank Vignola and Joe Byrd. He can also be heard on the sound track to the popular PBS television series, The Great Chefs, and the NPR broadcast Jazz Smithsonian.

Chuck's most noteworthy performances include an appearance with the Dizzy Gillespie Quintet in Africa for the Namibian Independence Day Celebration, a recital at the White House with the Barney Kessel Trio, concerts at Carnegie Hall with Mel Torme, and the Tonight Show.

In addition to leading his own group and ensembles with his brother, pianist Robert Redd, Chuck is currently a member of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and frequently performs in New York City with many artists and has presented educational workshops and lectures around the country.

Chuck's brand new Arbors release is Happy All The Time, a tribute to his mentor, Barney Kessel. The CD features Monty Alexander, Jeff Hamilton, Howard Alden, Gene Bertoncini, Robert Redd and Hassan Shakur.
