Acclaimed by Joseph Gingold as a "virtuoso of high rank," Julia Bushkova has appeared as a soloist with numerous orchestras and in recital throughout the United States, in her native Russia, as well as Germany, Italy, Canada, United Kingdom, Poland, South Africa, Mexico, Chile, and Venezuela. "Schwarzwalder Bote" (Germany) described her playing as "a Russian violin tradition of highest elegance." The "Grand Rapids Press" and the "Ann Arbor News" emphasized "her remarkable expressiveness and an unusually large and beautiful tone... her dazzling cadenzas and extraordinary technical execution."
She has been a featured performer on WBLV and WIAA Public Radio, WGVU-TV (Michigan), WFMT (Chicago), KOTM-FM and KGRS-FM (Iowa), WRUV-FM (Vermont), WRR Classical 100.1 (Dallas), CBS Public Radio (Canada) as well as nationwide on NPR's Performance Today.
Her most recent solo and concerti performances took her to New York, North Carolina, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Michigan, Canada, Italy, Venezuela, South Africa, and Belarus.
A dedicated chamber musician, Ms. Bushkova has participated in Columbia River Festival (WA), Fontana International Chamber Music Festival(MI), Yellow Barn Music Festival (VT), Interlochen Chamber Players (MI), Green Lake Festival (WI), Fontana Chamber Music Series (MI), Castelfranco International Festival, International Music Academy and Festival (Italy), The Chamber Music Society of Fort Worth (TX), Niagara International Chamber Music Festival (Canada), Barge Music, New York City, Stellenbosch International Festival, South Africa, and Port City Chamber Music Festival, North Carolina.
Ms. Bushkova has presented numerous master classes in the US and abroad. She has served as a judge at Luis Sigall International Violin Competition (Chile), taught at Brzewski International Master Classes (Poland), Yellow Barn Music School, Weathersfield Music Festival (Vermont), Niagara International School for Musical Arts (Canada), the International Academy of Music (Italy), Stellenbosch International Festival (South Africa), and most recently in Buenos Aires, (Argentina), Caracas (Venezuela), Minsk (Republic of Belarus), and Summit Music Festival (New York).
Ms. Bushkova's students have gone on to attend the finest conservatories, including the Curtis Institute of Music, The Juilliard School, Oberlin Conservatory, New England Conservatory, Cleveland Institute of Music, Eastman School of Music, Moscow Conservatory, and perform with well known ensembles and orchestras, such as Cavani String Quartet, Detroit Symphony, Dallas Symphony, Toronto Symphony, and New York Philharmonic.
Born into a family of renowned violinists in Moscow, Russia, Julia Bushkova began study of the violin at the age of five and made her concerto debut at the age of fifteen in Poland. She graduated with highest honors (summa cum laude) from the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory where she studied with Professors Zoria Shikhmurzaeva, Igor Bezrodny, Konstantin Adjemov and Dmitri Shebalin of the Borodin String Quartet. During this time, she performed in Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria and the former USSR, including concerts in Moscow's Great Hall and the Palace of Congress.

Philip Lewis

Philip Lewis, professor of Violin and Chamber Music, at the University of North Texas, has been described as a violinist of "rare excellence-combining sensitivity, virtuosity, warmth and vitality" (Baltimore Sun). Mr. Lewis has concertized as soloist and recitalist throughout the Asia, Canada, Europe and the United States. Mr. Lewis studied with Ivan Galamian in New York, and then Berl Senofsky at the Peabody Conservatory of Music where he earned his master's degree. Mr. Lewis has won several competitions including the Young Musicians' Foundation Competition in Los Angeles, and has been the recipient of a Rockefeller Grant. While concertmaster of the Calgary Philharmonic, Mr. Lewis made many solo recordings for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Mr. Lewis is the former violinist of both the Smelana and Koryo Piano Trios. He has also made many appearances with the Theatre Chamber Players of Kennedy Center. He has been a soloist under such conductors as Maurice Abravanel, Lukas Foss, Anshel Brusilow, Leon Fleisher and Maurice Handford. Mr. Lewis concertizes in many music festivals including the New American Music Festival of New York, the Aspen Music Festival, the Sitka Chamber Music Festival, Juneau Classics & Jazz, the Holland Chamber Music Society, the Grand Canyon Music Festival, the Park City (Utah) Chamber Music Festival, plus festivals in Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Mr. Lewis has been concertmaster of the Richardson Symphony Orchestra since 1980 and is a much sought after artist throughout North America. He also is the founder and director of Dallas based Chamber Music International. Philip Lewis plays a Sanctus Seraphin violin made in 1733, Venice, Italy. Many of his former students hold positions in major symphony orchestras and universities throughout the world. He has been on the College of Music faculty since 1978.
Felix Olschofka
Dr. Felix Olschofka joined the faculty of the University of North Texas, College of Music, in the fall of 2010 as Associate Professor of Violin. He holds a Bachelor and Master of Music from the Academy of Music "Hanns Eisler", Berlin, a Performance Diploma from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of California San Diego.
After serving as the teaching assistant to Mauricio Fuks, Dr. Olschofka was appointed Associate Instructor of Violin at Indiana University in 2002. From 2003-2010 he served on the faculty of the School of Music and Dance at San Diego State University. His professional background also includes Concertmaster of the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra (2000-2003) and Assistant Concertmaster of the Brandenburg Philharmonic in Potsdam, Germany, for its 1998/99-season.
On a regular basis Dr. Olschofka gives master classes at institutions such as Yale University, Eastman School of Music, Temple University, New York University, Florida International University, University of California Los Angeles, Academy of Music and Theater Rostock, Germany, Society for Electro Acoustic Music in Sweden (SEAMS), Stockholm, Universidad de Sao Paulo, Brazil, Universidad de Santiago, Chile, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), Mexico, Centro Mexicano para la Música y las Artes Sonoras (CMMAS), and Orchestra Academy of the Orquesta Sinfonica de Santa Cruz, Bolivia.
In 1993 Dr. Olschofka gave his international solo debut at the Seoul Arts Center with the Seoul Symphony Orchestra where he made his first recordings with the Seoul Symphony Orchestra for Korean television and radio. Since then he has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician in multiple concerts and festivals throughout Europe, South America, Mexico, South Korea, and the United States. The violin concertos by Beethoven, Brahms, Bruch, Mozart, Tschaikowsky, and Stravinsky are amongst Dr. Olschofka’s signature works for solo violin. His performances have been recorded and released by several radio and TV broadcasting stations such as NPR (USA), KBS (South-Korea), Megavision and ATB (South America), NRPR (Rumania), Deutsche Welle, ZDF, and WDR (Germany).
As founding member of SWARMIUS Dr. Olschofka has performed extensively across the United States and Europe in the past three years in multiple performances in New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, Berlin, Hamburg, Stockholm, Ljubljana and Venice. Aside from the classical repertoire, he has premiered numerous contemporary works for solo violin along with unique combinations of instruments with violin such as saxophone and percussion.
Aside from his active performing career, Dr. Olschofka serves as an adjudicator on numerous juries of international competitions such as the Concurso Nacional de Violin "Hermilo Novelo" in Mexico, the International Queen Sophie Charlotte Violin Competition in Germany and the International Young Artists Competition in Southern California. His students won prizes at national and international competitions such as the Fischoff National Chamber Music and the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition in Japan.
Dr. Olschofka himself is a winner of numerous awards and competitions. He holds two 1st prizes in the prestigious German Youth Music Competition (Solo Instrument and Chamber Music Category), 2nd prize of the International Chamber Music Competition "Charles Hennen" in the Netherlands and a grant from the Oscar and Vera Ritter Foundation.
Nathan Olson

Phone: 940-565-3731 A native of Berkeley, California, violinist Nathan Olson is in his first year as Co-Concertmaster with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Prior to his appointment with the DSO in 2011, Nathan held the position of Concertmaster with the Canton Symphony Orchestra and CityMusic Cleveland. Currently Concertmaster of the Breckenridge Music Festival, he has participated in the Mainly Mozart Festival, the Bravo Vail Music Festival, and the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival. Nathan is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music’s prestigious Concertmaster Academy, where he studied with William Preucil and Paul Kantor. He has soloed with the Canton Symphony Orchestra, the Breckenridge Music Festival Orchestra, the Cleveland Pops Orchestra, CityMusic Cleveland, and the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra. As a member of the Kashii String Quartet, he served on faculty at the Innsbrook Music Festival and won the silver medal at the 2005 Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition. In recent seasons, Nathan has appeared as Guest Concertmaster with the Symphony Orchestras of Toronto, Omaha, and Tucson, and as Principal Second Violin with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. Phone: 940-565-3716 Cynthia Roberts is one of America's leading baroque violinists and has appeared as soloist, leader, and recitalist throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. She has served as concertmaster of the New York Collegium, Apollo's Fire, Concert Royal, and Les Arts Florissants. She performs regularly with the Boston Early Music Festival, Tafelmusik, and the American Bach Soloists. She has appeared with the London Classical Players, Taverner Players, Clarion Music Society, and Smithsonian Chamber Players. Her playing was featured on the soundtrack of the film Casanova and she has performed live on the Late Show with David Letterman. She recently toured South America as concertmaster of the Los Angeles ensemble Musica Angelica with actor John Malkovich in The Infernal Comedy: Confessions of a Serial Killer and appeared as guest soloist and concertmaster with the New World Symphony conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. Ms. Roberts also teaches at the Juilliard School and the Oberlin Baroque Performance Institute. She has given master classes at Eastman, the Cleveland Institute, Cornell, Rutgers, the Minsk Conservatory in Belarus, and for the Jeune Orchestre Atlantique in Santes, France. Her recording credits include Sony, Analekta, BMG/Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, and Eclectra.
At age 12, Ms. Roberts debuted with Chicago's Grant Park Symphony, performing the Mendelssohn Concerto, and three years later appeared as soloist with the Boston Pops. Recent highlights include recordings of sonatas and trios with fortepianist Christoph Hammer, a national broadcast on NPR's Performance Today of Bach's Fourth Brandenburg Concerto, a solo performance of Bach's Sonatas for Violin & Violin & Harpsichord at the Mostly Mozart Festival, recordings of the complete Brandenburg Concertos and Monteverdi's Orfeo with Apollo's Fire, chamber music at the Prague Festival and the Boston Early Music Festival. She has made more than fifty recordings on such labels as Sony Classical, BMG/Deutsche Harmonia Mundi and Electra, as well as numerous broadcasts for NPR, CBC and WDR.
Ms. Roberts has been on the faculty at UNT since 2000.
