Principal Lecturer - Flute
elizabeth.mcnutt@unt.edu / (940) 369-3706
Virtuoso flutist Elizabeth McNutt discovered her passion for new and adventurous music almost as soon as she began playing. She has dedicated herself to this path, commissioning and premiering countless new works and becoming an expert interpreter of the masterpieces of the last century. Besides her ongoing collaborations with young and upcoming composers, “commanding flutist Elizabeth McNutt” (LA Times) has worked with such recognized figures as Pierre Boulez, Brian Ferneyhough, Harvey Sollberger, Cort Lippe, Philippe Manoury, Russell Pinkston, Roger Reynolds, Joji Yuasa, and Joan Tower. Particularly drawn to the new sound worlds of electronic music, she collaborates intensively with composers and technologists to create groundbreaking works for flute and live interactive computer systems. Her solo CD pipe wrench: flute + computer, on the Electronic Music Foundation Media label, was recently described as “astounding” (Flute Talk), “high octane” (Musicworks), and “a delightful listen” (SEAMUS Newsletter). Her other recordings are on the CRI and SEAMUS labels.
McNutt has performed across the USA, including concerts in Baltimore, Birmingham, Chicago, San Francisco, and Philadelphia. Her international appearances include England, Germany, Greece, Korea, Singapore, and Switzerland. Her "cyber-flute" repertoire has been featured at the Los Angeles Philharmonic Green Umbrella Series, Hallswalls Contemporary Art Center, Steinberg Gallery of Art, the Berkeley Symphony, and International Computer Music Conferences. She was the featured artist in the 2002 Electronic Music Midwest Festival (the first time they have featured a performer instead of a composer), and the 2003 Third Practice Festival. She has also been a soloist at such festivals as Darmstadt, Scotia, Norfolk, and Arcosanti. McNutt is a frequent lecturer on topics including contemporary performance practice, flute technique, performing with technology, and collaboration. She has lectured at Peabody Conservatory, Louisiana State University, Cincinnati Conservatory, and Minnesota State University, among others. American Composers’ Forum, Colorado Flute Association, Mid-South Flute Society, and New Jersey Composers’ Guild have also sponsored her presentations. Her writing has appeared in Organised Sound (Cambridge Press), the National Flute Association’s Flutist Quarterly, Music Theory Online, the Boulder Daily Camera, and the Colorado Flute Association Newsletter.
McNutt has won awards and fellowships from the Boulder County Arts Alliance Neodata Endowment, National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts, Arts International, the Rocky Mountain Women’s Institute, and the American Composers Forum. Formerly an instructor at the University of Colorado, Boulder, she recently joined the faculty of the University of North Texas. She also co-directs the new music organization Atomic Clock Music Events. Her degrees are from UC San Diego (DMA, 2000; MA, 1994) and the St. Louis Conservatory (BM, 1990); her teachers have included Harvey Sollberger, John Fonville, and Jacob Berg (flute), and Miller Puckette
James Scott
Dean
Professor of Flute
james.scott@unt.edu / (940) 565-3704
James Scott's musical career embraces over four decades of accomplishments as a performing musician, a teacher, and an administrator. He began his distinguished professional career while still a first-year student at Emory University, winning a position as flutist in the Atlanta Symphony at a time that made him one of the youngest musicians in the history of the orchestra.
Scott earned degrees in both flute and piano from the Oberlin Conservatory and the Peabody Conservatory with a doctoral thesis in the area of music theory, dealing with structural aspects of pre-serial Schoenberg and their relationship to late Brahms works. He served for many years as a faculty member and head of the music program at Rutgers University. During these years he gave recitals throughout the metropolitan New York area, in Canada, in the Far East, and throughout the United States. He also performed with the Woodwind Repertory Group of New York, the Schola Cantorum Orchestra, Princeton Pro Musica, Princeton Ballet Orchestra, Opera Theater of New Jersey, Metro Lyric Opera Orchestra, and the Camerata Chamber Orchestra. Much of his performing career has been in the service of new music and reviving neglected works from the past.
Scott later became associate dean for instruction and professor of flute at Indiana University, performing as principal flutist of the Indiana University Festival Orchestra with which he appeared as soloist in Lukas Foss' Renaissance Concerto under the direction of the composer. He also served as Director of the School of Music at the University of Illinois before beginning his current work in 2001 as Dean of the College of Music at the University of North Texas. Teaching has remained central to his interests, and a number of his former students hold tenured and tenure-track positions in various universities. He continues to give master classes in this country and abroad.
Scott's major flute teachers include Robert Willoughby, Britton Johnson, Charles DeLaney, Marcel Moyse, and Geoffrey Gilbert. As a soloist and chamber musician, Scott has performed with such artists as Samuel Baron, Bernard Greenhouse, Stanley Drucker, Ilana Vered, Frederick Urrey, Jens Nygaard, Jerry Hadley, Max Pommer, Nicholas Goluses, William Purvis, Lukas Foss, Jon Nakamatsu, and the Shanghai String Quartet.
Other professional activities include his recent chairmanship of the Commission on Accreditation of the National Assn. of Schools of Music and his presidency of Pi Kappa Lambda, the national music honor society. He is frequently asked to serve on evaluation teams for music programs in this country and abroad.
